Soft Graphite Felt vs Rigid Graphite Felt

Soft graphite felt and rigid graphite felt are both carbon insulation materials, but they serve different installation needs.

Main Difference

Soft graphite felt is flexible and useful for lining, wrapping and layered insulation. Rigid graphite felt is self-supporting and better suited to boards, cylinders and formed insulation structures. In some hot-zone designs the two forms are used together for different functions.

Selection Factors

The choice should consider furnace geometry, atmosphere, required thickness, handling method and purity requirement. If the insulation must hold shape during installation or service, rigid felt may be the better starting point. Soft felt may be easier where a curved surface, joint or compressible layer needs to be covered.

  • Identify flexible lining areas and self-supporting sections.

What to Discuss With a Supplier

Do not choose only by product name or thickness. Share the furnace geometry, working atmosphere, installation method and whether the material must support itself so the supplier can review the correct form and grade.

Verify Before a Volume Order

Compare samples for dimensional fit, edge condition and handling before changing a hot-zone design. The final order should state material type, grade, thickness, size, quantity and agreed inspection requirements.
